Please help us welcome our newest drumming instructor to labarre studios! Leilani Borer is sure to get the best out of anyone who attends her class because when you are around her she lights up the room with a smile, warms you with her personality and… well… she’s in damn good shape so be prepared for a great workout! A product of Vancouver, British Columbia, Leilani headed to University of the Pacific and has made the Bay Area her home ever since. For the past 17 years she has worked as a financial advisor and in her spare time she enjoys being a terrific mom to her two sons as well as a great wife to her husband Mark. Her other love, besides her family, is being active. Growing up, she almost exclusively played sports. As a natural athlete, Leilani did most everything, but in high school refined the scope of her athletics to focus on golf, tennis and track where she was a 100m sprinter. She excelled at all but was a shining track star where she (humbly recalls) setting the provincial record for the 100m. When Leilani headed to college, she never lost site of her love of fitness, however she began incorporate long distance running into her repertoire. As a marathoner, Leilani still finds her happy place is when she is pushing herself, but she also enjoys the confines of class settings, enjoying whole-body workouts such as yoga and barre. “I have always been a cardio person, and that is why I was drawn to drumming.” Leilani reflects on becoming a drumming instructor after being a student for only a short while. “The first drumming class I took was here, at labarre studios. I liked the fact that it incorporated barre so I find myself getting a full-body workout. I also liked the music and, of course, the movements.” As she goes from being a participant in the class to teaching the entire class, the shift for Leilani is an exciting one. She explains what is fulfilling for her as both a student and an instructor when it comes to creating the best drumming class. “I think it starts with a great warm-up and then it carries on to working all of the parts of your body to music. Its getting your cardio up, getting in a great stretch and you also get to have a lot of fun!” The interaction with the instructor in a drumming class does not go unnoticed to Leilani and as she prepares to guide guests at labarre, she reflects on the importance of that leader in order to make a class optimal for those who enter the studio. “I think it’s important to keep guests’ energy and excitement at the highest level. Drumming, to me, makes people a little more exhausted then other classes, so you have to work on keeping that energy high.” As she gets on the schedule and prepares to put on the headset and lead class Leilani is nervous but feels blessed as well. “I think it will be fun to have a packed house because I feed off of people’s energy… if they are energetic, it just makes it more fun. The studio has such a great atmosphere and Lisa [labarre’s founder] has created such a great feel and aura to it and I have noticed that the parent’s from our kids’ school that have come here are changing. Lisa has revolutionized how they look and feel. They are getting more fit, they are losing weight and overall they are more happy.” Leilani, we couldn’t be happier that you are now a part of the labarre family. So get your heart racing, grab some drumsticks and join Leilani in her first drumming class!
