Born in Peru and raised in Ecuador, Erika DeClerck moved to the United States to attend college. This mom of 4 has always been active - whether it was being a gymnast or a track and field runner from a young age to running marathons, Erika has put a lot of stress on her body as she continues to work hard to be in tip-top shape.
That wear and tear caught up to Erika, though, and her injuries led to the need for several knee surgeries. When the surgeries mounted and she was told she may need shoulder surgery, she looked at other options. Hot yoga became one of those options for her to alleviate the pain and it proved to be incredibly therapeutic. It turned out that it was just the thing she needed.
After 9 months of doing hot yoga, Erika found that the need for surgery was not there anymore as her pain subsided. Her fitness journey, like a great marathon runner, would break through the wall and she began to actively explore more of what this type of therapy had to offer.
“There are benefits that people don’t know about from yoga, working at your level will help you in ways that you might not know. That is what happened to me” Erika notes.
However, it didn’t stop there. After her last pregnancy, Erika explored barre as an option and in 6 months time she lost all of her gained weight. Barre (along with yoga) would then become a staple in her workout so much so that she decided to actively pursue an opportunity to audition at labarre studios.
Upon meeting Lisa Alberino, labarre’s founder, Erika knew this could be a perfect match. “Even before auditioning, Lisa made me feel part of the group, part of the family. She was inviting, friendly, and positive. I knew it was for me.” Erika says with a smile.
As she becomes a certified instructor for labarre, guests will enjoy her style of teaching and getting people involved. Erika’s energy and presence shines through and her smile is infectious. Erika connects with people at more than the fitness level and you can see it in the faces and attitudes of those who have attended a class.
“I try and walk in and assess the class and make it personal. That connection should be special and that is why people will want to come.”
Erika’s philosophy is co-signed by labarre and we are thrilled to have her. She welcomes anyone to join because that is exactly who barre is for, according to Erika.
“Barre is a workout that is tailored to anyone of any size, any shape and with any injuries. You will find flexibility, strength and you will get to your goals you just have to commit to it.”
We are committed to you, Erika! Welcome to our family!
